ARTiculating Science

Leonardo da Vinci wrote, "Art is the queen of all science, communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world." The foundation of my art is rooted in the scientific aspects of the natural world. The delicate details of nature are important because they show a balance and structure to the world around us. I like to highlight these structures and organisms because they are often ignored or unknown.

Although all of my images are based on biological concepts, they can also be fanciful, or are sometimes used metaphorically to describe emotions and personal characteristics. Using artistic metaphors in an introspective manner helps me to better examine issues and events, as well as elements of my own character. Creating symbolic self-portraiture has helped me to better understand how I think, and to adapt to my different strengths and weaknesses.

My works cross many different media. I value a diversity of techniques because it gives me the opportunity to pick which style I think best fits the subject matter I am working with. Photography allows me to capture a direct representation of my subject. These images are not only art, but are also scientific documentation to aid my research and study. My drawings always contain fine detail, and sharp contrasts of light versus dark, and my paintings are full of rich colors. My work is not about the process of making the art, but rather, about the end result. This makes for a distinctly eclectic body of work, but it does follow a consistent theme; whether work is three-dimensional, two-dimensional, acrylic, or colored pencil, I endeavor to highlight the finer details of the natural world.
